Adobe develops some of the best software tools for web design and image editing but the licenses for these tools are often too expensive to afford for a majority of freelance designers or even small businesses who have a limited budget for software.
If you have wanting to use Adobe tools but were unable to justify the high up-front cost of software licenses, here’s something for you – you can now rent Adobe software and pay a fixed monthly fee. When your project is complete, simply cancel the subscription.
To give you an example, a single-user license for Adobe Photoshop costs around $700 but if you only plan to use it for a month or two, you can rent Photoshop from Adobe.com by paying $49 per month. The following chart compares the regular and pay-as-you-go costs of various Adobe software titles that are available through subscription.
Regular Price | Monthly Subscription | Yearly Subscription* | |
---|---|---|---|
Adobe Photoshop | $699 | $49 | $420 |
Adobe Dreamweaver | $399 | $29 | $228 |
Adobe Illustrator | $599 | $45 | $348 |
Adobe Indesign | $699 | $49 | $420 |
Adobe Flash | $699 | $49 | $420 |
Adobe Premiere | $799 | $59 | $468 |
Adobe After Effects | $999 | $75 | $588 |

[*] Yearly subscriptions cost anywhere between 58-60% the regular price.
All Adobe software are available for a 30-day trial download but the software license agreement prohibits you from using trial software for any commercial purpose. You can’t create a website mockup in Photoshop for your client using a trial version. That’s where a subscription may come handy.

Software subscriptions are also a good option for users who have an older version that meets all their requirements. For instance, you could be running Photoshop CS but your next project requires you to use to Photoshop CS5 Extended since it has support for 3D. Instead of buying a new license, you could simply rent Photoshop CS5 for the duration of the project.
Some of the other Adobe products – Adobe Captivate, Lightroom and Adobe Audition for example, are not available through subscription though.
The following video will walk you through the process of buying subscription based software from Adobe.com. You can check the subscriptions page on Adobe for more details.
Also, software subscriptions are only available through Adobe.com and it is therefore obvious that they’ll be available only in countries where Adobe has an online store. Use the store selector to see if Adobe has a store in your country – they definitely don’t have one India yet.
Earlier, Microsoft also offered the Office Suite in India under a similar prepaid scheme though I doubt if that option is available any longer.

Adding hyperlinks in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator isn’t as simple as selecting text or right clicking an image and finding the option easily available. That doesn’t mean there aren’t work arounds available in both programs to add links to text, images, and objects.
How to Add Hyperlinks in Adobe Photoshop
The easiest option for adding links to Photoshop is to use the Slice feature. The catch here is that you will have to save and share your document as an HTML file.
- After you’ve inserted the image or text you want to add a hyperlink to, in Photoshop select the Slice tool, which you’ll find by clicking the Crop tool in the tools menu and holding down until you see the list with the knife icon (or try the useful Photoshop keyboard shortcutAdobe Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts 101Adobe Photoshop Keyboard Shortcuts 101Whether you're a beginner or a pro, these Adobe Photoshop keyboard shortcuts will save you hours of time.Read MoreC.)
- Right-click your newly inserted slice and click Edit slice options.
- In the dialog box that opens, insert your link in the URL field and click ok. If you want the link to open in a new window, select “_blank” from the dropdown menu for Target. Click OK.
- Once you’re ready to save your file, click File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)
- In the dialog box that opens, the only thing you need to select is the Preset. You can select any of the JPG or PNG options and click Save.
- In the dialog box that opens, type in your file name and click the File Format dropdown and select HTML and Images. Click Save.
How to Add Hyperlinks in Adobe Illustrator
It’s a little simpler to add a link to an image in Illustrator, but there’s also a catch: you’ll have to save the file as a PDF.
- Select the Text tool (keyboard shortcut T) and insert your link on top of the image or object you want to add the link to. Make sure when you insert the link to insert http://.
- You’re going to need to find a way to hide the text of the link. You can place it behind the object by right-clicking and selecting Arrange > Send to Back. You can also change the color to the same color as your background or the object you’re linking if it’s a solid color.
- Click File > Save as.
- In the dialog box that opens up, enter your file name and for the format select PDF.
This method doesn’t work with text boxes. If you want to add a link to text, you can follow the steps above, but you’ll have to convert your text to outlines first. To do this, right-click the text box and select Create Outlines. But be warned, once you’ve done this, you can’t edit the text.

- Just had an issue with this, but figured it out:
When clicking on the link in the saved PDF, the browser would open, but only have part of the link in the address box, so it wouldn't make it to the destination page.
Turns out, the font you use matters quite a bit. I was using Myriad Pro throughout my document, and for the link text, but the double 'ff' in my link was not recognizable to the PDF program (Preview on Mac) and so it was just ending the link there.
I changed the font to Arial, and now it works just fine.
Hopefully this is helpful to anyone else running into an issue, and thanks Nancy for writing and posting this article! - Great post, and I have learned from this tutorial, many thanks for sharing
